Question 1. After reading Book 1: Discuss what you think is the main conflict in this first part of the novella and how you think it will be resolved in the end. Be specific.

  1. I believe that the main conflict in this first part of the novella is trying to live and adapt to his new change. For example, he has an extremely difficult time just trying to do simple things such as getting out of bed and unlocking a door. In addition, he is now going to have to try new methods of communication since he cannot be understood because of his new condition. He understands every word he says but cannot make the people around him understand. To them he sounds like an aninimal, then seeing what he looks like further difficults his task of trying to communicate. Moreover, his outward appearance terrifies everyone, making any effort to callm them on his part in vain. The family is obviously terrified, not even taking into consideration that their son and brother has drastically changed and needs help. Gregor first thought of trying to get help out of bed, but realized that since the doors were locked, it would be practically impossible. Nevertheless, he is willing to accecpt any help during his present condition. I believe that this conflict may be resolved by giving the parents time to calm down and then begin efforts to try to help Gregor. As of his present condition, they do not know what to do. However, I believe that they will find a way to help him in any way they can. In addition, Gregor might be able to better communicate with them, making his life with his new change, a little easier.

  2. I think there are many conflicts in chapter one of THE METAMORPHOSIS. Some of these are Gregor's transformation into an insect, his differences with his boss, his inability to work and perform simple tasks, and his family's reaction to his new form. However, I think the biggest conflict of this chapter is Gregor's internal conflict with himself. Kafka makes it very clear that Gregor has no respect for himself to the point that he sacrifices his own happiness for the well-being of his family. He is the only person in his family that works, and all of his profits go to support his family, which shows him little respect for all he does for them. Gregor has alienated himself from the world because of his work. He has no social life, and cares for nothing more than to pay off his family's debt, which he is not even responsible for. Though he has been turned into an insect overnight, Gregor seems to show little or no distress over this dilemma, worrying instead because he is late for work. It seems that Gregor's family abuses him almost to the point of oppression, yet he refuses to fight back, and even forgives them. Kafka also mentions that Gregor wishes with great passion to speak out against his boss, but he does not have the guts to do it. He has a lack of self-respect, and will not stand up for himself. I think there are two obvious ways this conflict can be resolved. First, Gregor could rebel against his family, his boss, and society and earn his dignity. Second, Gregor could escape their tyranny in one way or another, whether it be physically running away, deciding to separate himself from them, or even dying. Based on how the novella started out, I would have to say it will probably bee resolved in the second way.

  3. There are a few conflicts in the first part of the novella. They are Gregor trying to get out of bed, Gregor getting used to his new body, Gregor trying to unlock his door, and Gregor wondering what he will say to his family and manager because they want to know why he did not catch his train. I think that all of these conflicts relate to one main conflict. That main conflict is Gregor getting used to his new body. I think this is the main conflict because Gregor is having a hard time getting out of bed and unlocking his door due to his new body. Also, Gregor would have left already to catch his train if his body was not the way it was. This is why I believe that Gregor trying to adapt to his new body is the main conflict of part one.

In the end of the novella, I think that somehow, Gregor will be transformed back into his regular human body. I think he will learn, as a bug, that life is not all about business. We are told that Gregor is man that is concerned only about business. Maybe if he changes his lifestyle, he might change back to the way he was. This is just my prediction from what I have read so far.

  4. The main conflict in the first part of the novella is how Gregor must get to work even though he has been turned into a huge insect. He must work because his parents are in debt to his boss and they must pay it off. Gregor know what will happen if he is late for work. His problem is that he cannot even get out of bed to catch his train to work because he is an insect. He realizes that he needs to work but is unable to do so. Things get worse when the chief clerk of the company comes to check on why Gregor is not at work. The clerk then starts a long, ranting speech about how Gregor should be more productive in his work and might be fired. Gregor then gives an apology and begs the clerk not to fire him. Gregor does not want to be fired and does everything he can to get up and open the door, which causes him to start bleeding. Gregor is committed to his job and does not want to be fired. Gregor is having a hard time understanding what is happening and just wants to help his family by working. Unfortunately, I think Gregor being fired from work because he is an insect will resolve the conflict. Then, I believe that his sister or mother will have to get a job to pay off the debt. I also predict that the conflict will create extreme amounts of stress for Gregor's family financially and his family's life at home.

  5. I believe that the conflict in the first part of the novella is that no one knows what Gregor is. They think he is a monster. No one knows what happened to him. Also, no one can understand him. Because of this no one knows that he does not want to cause harm. I think that for the conflict to be resolved the parents have to accept Gregor in his new state. They have to believe that Gregor will not hurt them and that he is not a monster. They also have to believe that the animal is Gregor.

  6. The main conflict in the first part of the novella is the fact that Gregor is a monstrous vermin. This is a conflict because he may loose his job because of it. I think that Gregor is also going to have to get used to using his new pair of "legs." I think this conflict will be resolved in the end by Gregor becoming human again. His conflict could also be resolved by Gregor being killed.

  7. After reading Book 1, I perceived that the main conflict is how Gregor Mamsa does not appear daunted or terrified that he has been transformed into a "monstrous vermin." On the contrary, he encompasses a surprisingly optimistic viewpoint on everything, given his horrific state and condition. He possesses absolutely no doubt that his family will accept him and everything will be fine between them, despite being able to properly communicate with them. Moreover, he is utterly convinced that he will be able to return to his former life with no problems. He is determined upon returning to work as soon as possible. The most disturbing aspect, however, is how Gregor does not even appear phased that he is a bug! If I awoke to find myself as a bug, I would be exceptionally petrified. However, Gregor is not even worried over not being able to properly control his own body.
As for a resolution to Gregor's massive problem, I cannot perceive very many options. Despite Gregor firmly believing that he can return to his former state, there are many prohibiting obstacles standing in his way. First, his family does not accept him, and they cannot even understand him. In addition, he cannot even expertly control his new body. For these reasons, and given Gregor's state and condition, there is no solution to his problem. He will most likely end up shunned and/or killed by his own family in the end.

  8. I think the main conflict in Book 1 results from Gregor Samsa’s struggle to find his place in the world and more importantly in his own life. He feels tied down by the demands that his job relentlessly presents to him everyday as a traveling salesman. As an added burden, his family relies on his dedication to his job so that they can thrive. Gregor mentions the old debt that his family owes to the firm where he works, and he is tense and under pressure to perform well at his job at his family’s expense. He realizes the important role he plays in keeping their lives together, but that devotion is starting to slowly eat away at his conscience. I think Gregor wants to be unleashed from these duties as a top contributor to his family. He was not even surprised when he realized that he had undergone a transformation, which shows that he has almost reached his limit with his taxing career. He is so used to the monotonous routines in his life that no new changes can stir his emotions. I think his struggle of finding himself could be resolved in the end if he is able to free himself from the isolating constraints of his job. If his family found a way to manage without depending on him, he would be able to resolve his conflict since he would not feel as insecure and guilty for not measuring up to the needs of other people. Otherwise, if his current situation continues to weaken him, Gregor may feel that only death can save him from these miseries.

  9. I think that the main conflict is that Gregor is a beetle. He is stuck in bed and cannot get out of it. He is going to lose his job for this. I also think that Gregor thinks this is a dream, not real life. I have no idea how this conflict will be resolved. My best guess is that one day he will come to terms with his new self and everything will be okay, but at this point I am at a total loss at what will happpen.

  14. Scott Verner has left a new comment on your post " Question 1. After reading Book 1: Discuss what yo...":

The main conflict is that Gregor is now a giant insect. He needs to find out how to change back into a human so he can continue his normal life. He does not know how he turned into an insect, he just wakes up and notices he transformed. I predict that he will change back into a human in his sleep after several important events happen to his job, his family, or himself.

  15. In Franz Kafka's THE METAMORPHOSIS, numerous conflicts are presented in Book 1. The most obvious problem would be the fact that Gregor Samsa unexpectedly turns into vermin; however, this is not the preeminent dilemma. Through assumption, the cause of his metamorphosis is the chief conflict in this novella: Gregor slavery to a job in order to pay for the debts of his parents. To Kafka this may be a prominent problem especially in his life time. Gregor mentions how he does not enjoy his work too much, but has no choice other than to put up with it. If it wasn't for this unwonted debt of his parents, Gregor may have had a job that he loved. In the novella, when Gregor's sister Grete cried, he figured it was from one of the three crises which included no solution to pay off their parents' debt.It is unmerited for the children to pay for the debt of their parents. In the novella, this conflict may be resolved by Gregor and Grete realizing it is not their debt to pay off and their parents can find a solution. It is not their duty to cover for other people's mistakes. Gregor will then no longer be a vermin and have the job of his dreams.

  16. I think that there are multiple conflicts in the first book. One of the conflicts is a physical conflict. Gregor is not yet used to his new body and therefore cannot navigate correctly, which caused most of the problems on the day he woke up late for work. This conflict will be resolved with time, when Gregor learns more about his new body and how to maneuver it correctly. The other conflict in book one is that people do not accept him in his new form. His parents and executive from work are completely shocked when they see Gregor. Who wouldn't be? A huge bug in your house would terrify anyone, along with the strange mumbling from the insect. I think that maybe his parents will start to realize that the bug is still their son, and something has just gone terribly wrong. Hopefully they will get over their fears and try to take him to a doctor or something of that nature. Gregor will most likely lose his job and not even be able to explain what has happened (because he can't). I hope that Gregor finds some way to communicate with his parents so they can resolve this issue.

  17. I believe there happens to be more than one conflict in the beginning chapter. It's hard to pick just one considering there are a grand few, but the main conflict is Gregor's obvious transformation into an insect. He went to bed the night before just fine, human, and he wakes up going through a metamorphosis into a beetle. This main conflict branches out into a few others that are connected to his transformation. The manager of his job firm comes barging into his home, demanding to know why he isn't at work or didn't get on the train at his reported time. Because Gregor couldn't get out of bed, he couldn't make it to his train, and thus the predicament he is in. Although, Gregor's oddly positive outlook on the whole situation is a bit different. He has no clue how to even get out of bed yet he manages to keep everything a calm, "rose colored" perspective. As of how it will be resolved, I'm not entirely sure. Once Gregor figures out why he has been turned into a beetle, and fixes his faults, he may return to the way he was previously. Although, everything is up in the air at the moment.

  18. The main conflict of The Metamorphosis is Gregor's transformation from a human being into a human sized insect. Inthe morning,Gregor wakes up with a strange new body. He can hardly move and this startles him. He keeps thinking it's early in the morning, and he is a little delirious and he'll snap out of this in no time. Gregor's new insect body prevents him from getting out of bed to catch his train for work. When his manager comes to talk to him he has trouble in unlocking and opening the door in order to speak to his manager. When he finally gets to talk to his parents and manager, they are frightened by his new appearance and can not understand anything he says. As his manager leaves quickly,Gregor is telling him to put in a good word for him at work so they'll understand why he did not come in on regular time. Now, Gregor has to worry about losing his job because his manager left without understanding him. At the end of this novella I think somehow Gregor will return to his normal life. He'll get his job back if he loses it and his parents and himself will live in peace.

  19. The main conflict or problem in Book 1 is that Gregor, a traveling salesman with a normal life, has somehow woken up one morning as a huge insect!!! The conflict part is that Greg doesn't even know there's something wrong with him. He is trying to go about daily activities such as get out of bed, unlock a door, talk to his parents, and fit through the door. Greg, somehow, doesn't know he's turned into an insect. His personal conflict is trying to do those everyday activities, but failing. He must learn how to live as an insect because no one knows how or why this happened or when he will be a human again. I think Greg's boring life has led him to a punishment of some sort, kind of like things "could" be worse. Worse would be being an insect with everyone afraid of you, I guess. The many conflicts in this book will probably be resolved by Greg realizing that his life isn't as bad or boring as it seems, or by Greg having to prove something like he deserves being a human being even if he just lives his life by traveling and not being known by lots of people other than his family. From what I've read already, I think anything can happen, and I'm prepared for an extreme and odd ending!

  20. I think that the main conflict in the first part of Metamorphosis is between Gregor and the other characters. Gregor went through a change that he can not even understand. The people around him are just as shocked and frightened as he is. They do not know how to handle what has happened to Gregor, so they only react with fear. He tries to go up to his mother and his boss, but they run away in fear. Gregor does not understand why they are so frightened and this confuses and frustrates him. No one is fully understanding each other or what is happening to Gregor, which will always cause conflict.
I think that the conflict will resolve when either Gregor is turned back into a human or they learn that inside that beetle is the same Gregor that used to be human.

  21. I believe that the main conflict is that of Gregor trying to overcome the shock of what he has became and he is trying to understand why this has happened to him of all people. Also, there is an external conflict between Gregor and his family because his mom is overwhelmed at the site of her son and Gregor's father treats him like an animal when he forces him back into his room with the cane and newspaper. All Gregor wants to do is go to work.

In the end of the story I predict that his family will not accept him and will force him to leave his house and fend on his own.

  22. There are multiple conflicts so far. He has conflicts with his 'new body,' his family, and his boss/work. First off, Gregor cannot get used to the size and shape of his body. He has a difficult time just getting out of bed. Then, trying to flip over proves almost impossible. He could not even open the door without difficulty. Second, Gregor is in conflict with his family. His mother seems to be frightened by this and leaves. His father just seems to be annoyed by Gregor's current state. Third, I think THE MAIN CONFLICT right now is with Gregor and his job. It is both internal and external conflict. The external conflict comes when Gregor is trying to converse with and explain to his boss. The internal conflict with his job is also noticeable. His only goal in the entire first book is to get back working. This bothers him that he can not work. Since he is conflicting over not being able to work within himself, Gregor is experienceing internal conflict. This is what I believe the MAIN CONFLICT is in Book One.

  23. I think the main conflict in the first part of this novella is how Gregor and his family are accepting this "metamorphosis" that has taken place. Gregor himself is shocked to see what has happened to his own body and is trying his hardest to figure out how he is going to deal with it and make it work. When he finally opens the door and his family and the manager see though, they aren't trying to make it work. They simply take one look at him and think it is a terrible sight. It is almost as if just because of his appearance it has changed how they feel about their own son, for example, when Gregor's father chases him back into his room with a newspaper and a cane. I think that this conflict will be resolved once the family and the manager from the firm learn to accept the transformation Gregor has gone through and help get him through it and find out how and why this has happened and ways to make it go away.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I believe that the main conflict is that Gregor's family has turned against him. Even though Gregor has transformed into some unknown creature, he did not seem to be all that upset and was able to remain calm. However, is family did not react well to his new condition. His mother could barely speak and his father threatened to beat him with a cane. His family turning against him is the main conflict presented here. This problem will be resolved by his family coming to accept his condition.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the main conflict is Gregor's inability to adapt. When he encounters a problem he complained or thinks how others may be able to help him. Then when Gregor accomplishes something, he expects praise or reward. I think this situation would be resolved if Gregor realized that life is full of obstacles and he must adapt to survive.
