The ending is obviously bleak for Gregor but looks hopeful for his family. In a way, the family appreciates Gregor, and they follow some of his suggestions to get their spending under control. They plan to move into a smaller, more manageable apartment and to fire the maid. This could also have been one final insult to Gregor's memory, like they had him working harder for their own safety and comfort, but when they have to fend for themselves they become more conscience of their actions and the consequences that follow. At least Gregor's family finally gets their priorities in order.
I feel that the ending of The Metamorphosis is completely disheartening. I think that for Gregor himself, he died in a very bleak way, but with hindsight being 20/20, I think that it was a relief for him. The way the Samsa family reacted to Gregor’s death left me feeling unhopeful. When I die, I at least want to have a proper funeral and be mourned. They Samsa family did not even care that Gregor had died. They only felt relieved of the duty of taking caring of his burden. It was very bleak and depressing to think that all this time all Gregor wanted to do was please his family, but all his family cared about was the money Gregor earned. Grete ended up with more attention than the absence of Gregor. Mr. and Mrs. Samsa now were completely devoted to Grete and finding her a new husband. I think there was no other way to end the story. This was the perfect ending, but that does not mean that I enjoyed it. The ending was very bleak because of Gregor’s death and the way the Samsa family reacted to it.
I think that the ending of the novella is both bleak and hopeful. It is bleak because Gregor dies and realize that that is the best thing he could do for his family. He also dies without even a burial or even mourning. He dies in a useless way. The ending of the novella is also hopeful because of Grete. She is turned into a more mature person. She has also turned into a woman. This brings hope to the family that she will find a rich husband who will take care of the family.
I believe that the ending is bleak. True the family is looking to move some things in order to attempt to have a better life, however, they never really changed. True that Grete is young and pretty lively now, but is seems as if it is her turn to be the somewhat provider for the family. In the ending the mother and father begin a loose conversation of finding a "rich" husband for Grete. They purposely said "rich", I think, to further stress the fact that they are going to be carried once again through their finances. Basically, they intend to find a rich man to pay their debts, monthly bills, and basically look after them financially. Then Grete comes in, since she will be the wife of this rich husband, who must stay by and watch her husbands hard earned money go to her parents debts. Consequently, Grete may come to a point where she is similar to Gregor and has to continue her family duty to her parents till their death. Moreover, the parents and Grete, who appeared that they realized the labor of earning money, seemed as if nothing happened, as if Gregor was just a practice run and now they can start it all over, basically so the same thing can happen. I really beleive that the cycle of dependence on another for their financial needs will continue, hence leaving a bleak impression to me. Also, after all that happened with Gregor it seems as if it never happened, as if they never even had a son. A son who went through a metamorphosis and changed into an insect; like none of that happened. Again, this puts another bleak perspective to the novella. Overall, I saw the entire novella as a "bleak and depressing" novella, which includes the ending. Nothing was really gained or learned from the metamorphosis that Gregor had, it simply brought out Grete's emotional side, and forced the father to do some work. Nevertheless, it seems as if the mother and father plan to return to their life of relaxation and nonlabor. Therefore, I believe that the ending of the novella is pretty bleak.
The ending of The Metamorphosis, in my opinion, is principally bleak; however, it also possesses some amount of hope. Gregor's death serves as a constant reminder to the amount of torture and hard work he enduring throughout his so-called "life." Gregor always focused on being the sole supporter of his family, never allowing himself to focus on his own desires, such as love and affection. His family thrived only on Gregor's income, and they showed him absolutely no support whatsoever. However, now that he has transformed, they have had to realize that you have to work in order to make money, so they have all went out and found jobs. Even while he was alive as a beetle, they missed him solely for his income, not for Gregor the man. After his death, their celebration and enthusiasm further allow the reader to understand how tremendously Gregor has been considered an inconvenience to his own family. Although his death evokes bleak and austere emotions, his death also can symbolize hope - hope that he is now in a happier place, hope that he is no longer suffering, hope that he can finally find the happiness and affection he has been seeking his entire life. Although the fate of Gregor can never be determined, there is hope that he is in a better place no that he has died. His family, on the other hand, only adds to the austerity of the ending of The Metamorphosis. Their celebrations of Gregor's death represent how little they meant to him. Additionally, although they have learned to make a living, they totally contradict their new lifestyle by encouraging Grete to marry a rich man. His family shows little hope to become more benevolent or caring.
I believe that the ending is both bleak and hopeful. For Gregor, it was a bleak ending, as he died from a lack of care from his family. For his family, on the other hand, it seems to be a somewhat hopeful ending. I was so glad when they kicked the boarders out of the house. I'm guessing the family finally realized that these three people were too demanding and very rude. The father also says that he is going to fire the maid. This also made me pretty happy, because the maid just threw Gregor's body away like garbage and treated the family terribly as well. Finally, Gregor's family decides that they don't need a huge apartment. They are going to move into a more economical apartment for the small three person family. They finally realize that they don't need so much space, but they didn't care when Gregor was alive and working, obviously. Who was paying? Not them! I'm glad that Gregor's family finally came to their senses and realized that they were living too lavishly, and hopefully they don't make the same mistakes in the future.
The ending of The Metamorphosis is hopeful for Gregor's family. After Gregor's death, they make plans to make their lives simplier. They are going to look for a smaller apartment and they are plan on dismissing their cleaning lady. The family also hopes to find Grete a wealthy husband. They are looking to improve their lives because they feel that Gregor has caused them to suffer enough. For Gregor, the ending is bleak. He realizes that his family is in pain because of him and feels that he needs to let himself go to fulfill his family duty. He stops eating and becomes weak and starved. At the moment of his death there was no one there for him. Instead of mourning Gregor’s passing away, the family took the day off to plan their future together. Although he was finally freed from his isolated life, he never got to feel like he belonged, but only that no one wanted him. Gregor lived a lonely and secluded life and his death was just as depressing.
The ending of the novella is both bleak and hopeful. It's bleak for Gregor, since he does die. Death is always bleak and depressing, but what adds to the depression is that Gregor died to save his family. His family, who didn't care about him in human or insect form, and who take advantage of him. When Gregor was the main bread winner for the family, they never watched their finances. They knew they had debt, yet they let Gregor keep giving them more money than need. His family took advantage of his horrible situation. Gregor's whole life, not just the ending, was bleak. However, the ending also could be hopeful for the family. No matter how selfish and ungrateful they were, they were able to live through the most difficult situation they could live through. It's not every day that your son turns into a gigantic beetle. Also, Gregor's metamorphosis help them put their life in line. It helped his family realize they need to start supporting themselves and not wait for someone else to it. Also, at the end when they take a small vacation, they realize how much Grete has grown and matured. Their ending is only beginning and is rather hopeful, while Gregor's ending is final and bleak. Kafka lets the reader decide whether to be hopeful or depressed at the end; it's all on perspective.
The ending is both hopeful and bleak. It is hopeful because Gregor finally gets to be free of his burden to be the breadwinner for the family. It is also hopeful for Grete because she gets to get married and have a better job. The family also has a hopeful outlook because they all get new jobs and the burden, Gregor, is no longer in their life. The ending is bleak because Gregor never had to die. The Metamorphosis also had a bleak ending because Gregor died because he wanted too. This is bleak because if someone wants to die willingly, it is usually not a happy life style that they live.
The end is hopeful for everyone besides Gregor, who is dead. At the end of the story, the family takes a long, needed vacation for the day and goes to take a ride on a trolley. The sun is shining and they are having a good time. Gregor has died, making them happy because they do not have to take of him anymore. They can move into a smaller apartment since the vermin is gone. To them, Gregor has been dead since the beginning and so when the bug dies, it does not matter to them. Gregor's family is just happy that they do not have to take care of it anymore. They kick the three boarders out of their apartment, and are going to fire the house cleaner the next day. Now, they can have enough money to live and not work so hard. Gregor's mother and father also realize how young and beautiful Grete is and decide that they must start looking for a husband for her. A rich husband could get her out of having to work for a living. This shows how hopeful the situation is for Grete. I also believe that the family has a better understanding of all that Gregor did for them. In addition, the whole family finally realizes what is important in life.
Gregor's ending is bleak, but the rest of the families is hopeful. They have all got jobs now and are moving into a smaller apartment. The biggest burden is lifted when Gregor dies. They all take a day off and just relax and take their minds off of things. Grete has matured and should be looking for a husband soon. Mr. Samsa has became less lazy and the weak, helpess mother has also changed and is working.
I think the ending is hopeful. Although Gregor died, his death presented an opportunity for the Samsa family to begin anew. For instance, they no longer felt trapped in their apartment once he was gone. When Gregor died, a huge burden was lifted from his family. Also, the Samsas finally started to spend quality time together and Gregor’s death served to reconcile their relationships. He had to die in order for his family to learn how to operate as a family should without relying on just a single person. Right after his metamorphosis into a monstrous vermin, his family quickly had to learn how to manage without him. Mr. and Mrs. Samsa went back to work and Grete did as well. While Gregor’s metamorphosis was a depreciation for him, each member of his family evolved for the better, and each of them was able to live a more productive and fulfilling life. Grete transformed into a different person as suddenly as Gregor went through his transformation, and her parents finally saw the best of her personality after Gregor was no longer around to distract them. Overall, even though a death occurred, the ending of the novella was definitely optimistic to the rest of the characters that were involved.
I think the ending is extremely bleak. Kafka used his writing techniques greatly throughout. He showed us the life of a man who felt useless, taken advantage of, and who just wanted affection and attention from his family. Kafka built us up to feel like a huge turn would come, like the family would do something about Gregor or that he would possibly turn back into a human again. I'm sure many people would like to think that this would happen and the story would get some type happy ending or closure, but all we are really left with is a bleak ending with a kind of cliffhanger. It felt incomplete for me because of the situation. It was a good story, and any other ending would not have fit well for Kafka, but i still wanted to know more. I felt like it was bleak because all they did was throw the insect's body away. Also, they did not even try to see if Greg could understand them once. And, at the end they just go on with their lives as if nothing had happened and like Greg didn't even exist as a person before this incident. I felt like it was bleak also for gregor because he felt the blame for his family's grief, and he also just kinda killed himself by not eating for the sake of his family. This was a bleak ending in many ways, and I don;t know if i liked it.
The end is hopeful. One can look at it in a way that makes Gregor seem like a hero. He is actually the one that made the family successful. In the beginning, he was doing all the work. They relied on Gregor for the source of income. Then, once Gregor was unable to work, the entire family had to step up and work for the benefit of the whole family. Even though Gregor enters a reverse metamorphosis, it took this negative change in one person to bring about three positive changes. They were all now working and fulfilling their family duty. So, in that sense, Gregor himself caused this positive change on them. Also, I do not think the end is bleak for Gregor, because he would have wanted this. He did not want to be the one person that kept the family from succeeding and prospering, so he starved himself. This sacrafice actually fulfilled his family duty, because it eventually had an extreme positive change.
I think the ending of THE METAMORPHOSIS is both hopeful and bleak, all in one. Some might say it is a bleak ending because, not only did the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, die, but his family showed no sympathy whatsoever and were actually relieved by his death. In addition, they went straight back to the old way of thinking from before Gregor was transformed, and they did not learn a thing from the incident. However, there is also a sense of hope in the novella's ending. Kafka notes that "these [the family's prospects] weren't bad at all, for all three positions...were exceedingly advantageous and especially promising for the future." Gregor's death has allowed the family to make a good future for themselves, and things are really looking up for them. In conclusion, the ending is all based on perspective. For Gregor's family and its supporters, the future is hopeful. For Gregor and those who sympathize with him, the ending is quite bleak.
I feel that the ending is bleak. After Gregor dies, his family sort of rejoices and feels happy. There is nothing good about someone dying but aparently to Gregor's family there was. After Gregor dies, his family moves out of their apartment into a new smaller and more affordable one because money is most important to them. I think it's terrible how they just let the cleaning lady throw Gregor away. Another way the ending is bleak is that Gregor's family dehumanized him. When he died, it was just like an insect had died not a family member; therefore, they felt no remorse.
The ending is bleak for Gregor but it is hopeful for the rest of the family. Gregor never put himself above his family. He placed their needs before his own his entire life. However, as soon as he can no longer provide for them, they no longer care for him. Once he dies he is not even morned slighty or buried properly. The ending was hopeful for his family. Once Gregor dies the begin to feel happy like a weight has been lifted off of their shoulders. They have all gotten jobs and can now take care of themselves. They also start to notice how the daughter has grown into a young adult who will soon need to find a good husband. Gregor's bleak ending was necessary to allow his family to live happily.
I think that the ending seems mostly hopeful because of the family finally being able to depend on themselves rather than Gregor. I also think it is bleak because Gregor has died, but he was okay with dying because he knew it would lift the burden off his family. After the family decides to act like Gregor is not inside the monstrous vermin, it becomes easier for them to let it go. It also became easier for Gregor to see that if he did leave or die everything would be okay and his previous family duty was finally fufilled. He realized this when he heard his sister say that if the bug was actually Gregor he would understand that it was better for the family. Gregor's final family duty was to die, and that is exactly what he did to make life hopeful for his family.
The ending of Metamorphosis is actually hopeful, despite the whole Gregor incident. Grete is apparently a really talented musician, who could possibly make money playing the violin. Even if the violin does not work out, every member of the family has a job. Apparently Gregor's income was enough, because they had enough money to pay off debt, have a maid, and have spare money left over. Now that three people have a job, the income becomes much greater. At the expense of Gregor's life, his family's lives may have improved quite a bit.
In my opinion, I think that the ending is neither hopeful nor bleak. The ending cannot sound hopeful because all the Samsa family did with their lives was move on from their ordeal with the "monstrous vermin". If their is any hope in the ending, it would be that Grete might marry a man and become rich. However, I think that the chances of this are as great as Gregor's chances of having affection shown towards him. There is hardly any hope for the family. Also, the ending is not bleak because the family can still move on with their lives. Just because they move on does not mean that they will become more successful. Nevertheless, they still are able carry on with their lives. Life will go on for the Samsa family, and they can make the most of it. My point is that the ending of this novella is, for lack of a better word, "average". It is neither completely hopeful, nor completely bleak. I think that the Samsa family's ordeal with the "monstrous vermin" will slip away like a faded memory and they will move on with their lives. Whether or not they can make the most of their lives is a different story. The characters of the family have hardly changed. They are still the same way as they were at the beginning of the novella as they are at the end. We know that without Gregor the family did not get anywhere in the beginning, so how will they get anywhere with out Gregor in the end. This is why I think the ending is not hopeful. Life will carry on, and there will be oppurtunities for the family. This is why the ending is not bleak. In conclusion, the family member's lives will carry on the same as they had befor Gregor's metamporphosis. There is no hope nor bleakness; just average for the Samsa family.

ReplyDeleteThe ending is bleak for Gregor but it is hopeful for the rest of the family.
ReplyDeleteI think that the ending seems mostly hopeful because of the family finally being able to depend on themselves rather than Gregor.
ReplyDeleteThe ending of Metamorphosis is actually hopeful, despite the whole Gregor incident.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that the ending is neither hopeful nor bleak.
